R.I.P. Jimmy McGriff

It saddens me to say, legendary blues and jazz organist Jimmy McGriff passed away over the weekend due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis.
I've been playing some of his records tonight and thought I would post a few songs from him.

This whole nerd-ism with DJing has got to go. Once fools started making things overly (is that even a word?) technical it was all downhill from there. It's time to put down the triple click flares and start doing transforms with the line switch again.

Joe Cooley had so much style. Dude was an innovator and a huge influence on me when it comes to my own style. These cuts are from Me and Joe which is mandatory to own for any DJ worth a damn. So many good cuts on here it was hard to choose what to post.
And look at the cover! That was L.A. circa 1988. It looks like a Jordache factory blew up and started raining denim from the sky.

While Joe had style and a sense of humor with his cuts, Aladdin had precision and straight up funky shit. Just listen to what he does to "Rock the Bells" (which Q-Bert went on to build his whole routine from) and you'll see what I mean.

Besides transforms, Aladdin also had chirps and stabs on lock. Dude just cuts up the letter "W" and kills it. I love how he flips the timing at the end. When you listen to it you can tell he was FEELING IT...

Having some soul and emotion in whatever you do. No matter if it's scratching, dancing, drawing, whatever - you gotta transmit how you feel and connect with what you're doing, and in turn connect with everyone else.

Back on the block

It's been a (looooong) while since I've heard a solid song from CL Smooth, but I'm feeling this Destruments remix. I havn't heard of Destruments before, but they're a live band from...Boston? L.A.? Japan? I'm not quite sure. They have some other cuts up on their myspace worth checking out. CL needs to stick with this formula forilla.

New MPM Blog

I meant to post this last week. MPM launched a new Blog recently. All kinds of cool stuff over there, not just Melting Pot related. Maybe someone will read this and remember to call me!

Fusion, biatches

I'm back in effect after handling some things last week.
Real Life > Blogging - and you know this, man.

Fusion Batches is hands down one of my favorite mixes. I remember when this came out I was on my way to the airport for a big gig and a likkle nervous. I put this on and was instantly at ease. To quote Jazzy Jeff from the back cover "this is one of the dopest mix CDs I've ever heard". Thou art saying tho.

Most people know bay area native and recent L.A. transplant DJ Morse Code from his Hard Crack Candy mix series, or rocking alongside DJ AM and Mike B at LAX, but not too many know my man has RECORDS! Don't get it twitted, he may drop ELECTROBMOREBLOGHOUSE at the club, but best believe he knows his shit when it comes to the crates.
