So...

Back in August I got an email from DJ Hopper (SF) who made an hour+ long mix of all my music/releases/production. Needless to say, I was honored that someone would take the time to put this together, but I hesitated on posting it because as weird as it sounds, I was kind of embarrassed. Not to be on some false modesty ish, but I don't wanna be the "look at me" guy. That said, I would be the asshole guy if I didn't give my man's hard work some shine. So, if you dig what I make or haven't heard any original production, this one's for you.

Thanks, bud.

DJ Hopper - All Day Long

Choimatic

My man 100 grand, Moe Choi has been quietly killing the game from The Hamptons to Cannes after years of running the NY club scene. He just sent me this mix to share with you good people, but I'll let him break it down for you instead...

"Here is a 20 minute snippet of a wedding I DJ'ed. Cocktail hour heat. This is for you to bump on a lazy Sunday folding your laundry. Something for you to bump while you spoon with a dreamy latin bird on your tempurpedic & 2500 thread count Egyptians. Something for you to blast while you think about your master plan Cuz ain't nuthin but sweat inside your hands. Something for you to play when you invite that dimetastic shorty over to the lab for the first time. Something to bump while you do your dishes. Something for you to bump while you blaze that Jack Herer. Something for you to bump while you organize your gas receipts. Big shout to DJ Day for the giving me good winful advice on older broads. And to J-Zone, that gumby cut is not gonna get you any shellfish. No Wepa for you....."

Sky High

Rest in Power Alphonso "Fonce" Mizell (1943-2011). He and his brother Larry have been a huge influence on me since I began making music. I had no idea how much of an impact they made until I realized how many of my favorite records they were involved with. The list of artists go from Bobby Humphrey and Donald Byrd to The Jackson Five, Marvin Gaye and beyond.

I was fortunate to have met him during a Red Bull Music Academy brainstorm session in my hometown earlier this year. Needless to say, I ran home and grabbed a record for an autograph (I'm the guy who doesn't get "starstruck", but this was a once in a lifetime chance to meet my musical heroes). He was in poor health at the time, but coming home this week to find out he had passed hit me deeply.

Friend and fellow blogger Matthew Africa made a mix last year celebrating the genius of their production career. I highly recommend checking it out and reflecting on one of the greatest producers of our era.

DJ Matthew Africa - 2 Busy Saying Yeah 21 - The Mizell Bros.

Here's a couple Mizell produced edits I've previously posted...

Gary Bartz - Gentle Smiles (Saxy) (DJ Day Sax-less Mix)

Johnny Hammond - Shifting Gears (DJ Day Alt Mix)

There would be no this if there was no him.

Way Out of Living

Annnnnnnd I'm back...

As some of you know, I'm a part of the co-op/collective/art gang known as Piecelock 70, and every month we're dropping something for the folks. Whether it's free music, apparel, mixes, skate decks, albums, etc. something new is happening. It just so happens that April was my turn to set it off, so I come to you all with new mix in hand and new shirts (if you're so inclined).
The original idea was to do a ¡Reunión! mix, but I wanted to get all fancy with it and time was not on my side. Instead I went with the first thing that moved me and it's what set off the whole vibe of this mix**.

For those that know me, indeed I like to flow I’m not the most prolific dude when it comes to mixes. I have a habit of perfecting and personalizing a little too much and to be honest, this one is no different. It’s spring again, the world is falling apart and we could all use some “feel good” music, which is why I put this together for you, for free. I hope you enjoy it.

Thes One - Live At ¡Reunión!

Every guest I have at ¡Reunión! brings something unique to the table (which is why I have folks come through in the first place), and last Thursday was no exception. This was a night to play what we want, drink, sing, cuss, clown and most of all, have fun.
I went through 3 or so hours and took what I thought were the best parts. The first half was early into about peak time and the 2nd half is the late night IDGAF set.
All vinyl, all live. Enjoy.

Thes One - Live At ¡Reunión!

DJ Eleven - Live at Reunión

Last night was by far the craziest Reunión yet. Big shout out to everyone who came through (Tom Morello? Word?) and Aimlo, Huggs, Alf Alpha, Eleven and Gaslamp Killer who held it down like no one else.

I setup to record live and was hoping to get both Eleven and GLK's sets, but I ran out of room 45 minutes in (d o h). What I DID get though, was Eleven killing shit along with the crowd reaction in the room (I highly recommend copping one of these). I'll be recording and posting more live sets from time to time.

On Track

My man Kon never fails. He just dropped this mix in support of On Track Vol. 3 coming out this April on BBE with partner Amir. This one is really on some other shit. Highly recommended.

Kon - Strong Love

Be sure to check out his blog, Playin' 4 Keeps for more goodness like this.

Bullies & Brothels

My man who needs no introduction, Seatlle's own DJ Mr. Supreme (aka Supreme La Rock, aka One of the Illest in the Game) just dropped this movie mix in preparation for his all 45's gig with Skeme Richards in NYC this weekend.

"In preparation of the Hot Peas & Butta "Bullies & Brothels" party hitting NYC this weekend I've done a mix that was inspired by movies of the 1970's. Complete with previews and coke commercial. Get the popcorn ready. This is rated R. Under 17 not admitted without an adult."

The Beat Bee

Extended family, Food One (Jim Mahfood) & Jane Dope have been holding it down with their (semi) weekly Beat Bee Sessions podcast rocking everything from Funkadelic and PUTS to DFA and Nucleus. Reminds me of those love letter/cassette mixes you'd make when you first meet someone you like (shout out to Ione Skye - C*r*en I see you!). Their taste runs wild and deep and you can tell they have a good time putting these together. Recommended listening.

High Life

I'm trying to think of something to write while I listen to this, but keep getting distracted by something new every sentence. I'm seriously late on this one. My man Suff Daddy dropped this mix of his production/remixes a few months back and needless to say, there's some seriously fresh shit on here. Time for me to get back in the lab! Enjoy, it's free. Right click/save as.

Galactic Hot Tub Music

The title says it all.

Big up to the gawd, Delay! This mix is ridiculous. If you don't know about my man,

Doc Delay & Sean Manchee - Galactic Hot Tub Music

That REAL Schitt

The gawd, Phill Most - AKA Soulman (do I really need to tell you who dude is?) just dropped a new mix after his Hova like retirement from the break game. Thousands of nerds (and regular ol' people who like good music) rejoice! Check out Phill's breakdown in his own words and the link below...

"Just when you thought I was retired from the break mix game (I thought I was retired too, who knew)... I started working on this mix almost exactly one year ago and finally finished it today while the wife was at the movies with the kids watching Up (they said it was good). The original idea was to do a joint with all kinds of weird records from a bunch of different genres and countries. Somehow, it ended up being all rock records. Or at least records that would probably be filed in the rock section at your friendly neighborhood record shoppe. That's all I'll say about it, other than this is probably one of my weirder mixes- definitely maintaining the basic Soulman style but with some strange deviations from my traditional format as well. I gotta admit this is one of my favorites- I'm rarely pleased with the finished product of anything I do, but I must say that I was very happy with the results this time."

SOULMAN - THE TRUTH IS FOREVER

Moe Choi is gonna be pissed

...but I'm posting this anyway. Last year we started working on a mix that was never finished, so I'm putting a public foot in his ass and posting part of mine.

All live (remixes and all).

DJ Day - Minimix in full effectamundo.

Moe, let's do this foolio!
